Trying to get lucky in a very volatile market

This is what this morning and yesterday look like. Ultra volatile.

Berkshire’s edged back a little. Maybe put a buy order in a $165? You might get lucky.

BRKB

Nice positive write up on Berkshire here.

My favorite SQ continues to look good:

You might get lucky and pick them up at $24. This mid-morning’s market is acting weird.

I’m livid

+ That my eye doctor didn’t tell me that my new cataract lens would cause my  vision to markedly worsen two years down the road.

+ That I didn’t study up on his cataract diagnosis/recommendation before I let him do the operation.

+ That it took so long for my eye doctors (and me) to finally figure what my problem was and that it was trivial to fix — a  one-minute YAG laser procedure.

By the way cataract operations can affect your diabetes. Don’t trust me. Remember our motto: CHECK. CHECK. CHECK.

Summer storms bring spikes and surges

You must protect everything and anything electric — including boilers, TVs, cable boxes … anything electronic. And basically everything is electronic today.

When I leave our country house, I unplug our DSL modem and our wireless router. I also pull the grey phone cable out of the modem, since spikes and surges also come up phone lines and destroy modems.

Another Don’t Do Stupid

A friend has two step ladders in her kitchen. One is a one step. One is two steps. She was on the two-step ladder, thought she was on the one-step ladder. She stepped backwards, thinking she was the ground. She tripped, fell backwards and hit her head.

She’s bruised, shaken up and lucky. Don’t do stupid.

Tell your kids to become plumbers

My friend is paying $180 an hour for a New York City plumber.

If the plumber worked 40 hours a week for 50 weeks a year, he would earn $360,000 a year.

That’s not shabby. More than most college professors.

I’m not being stupid, nor denying the benefit of a college educations. But … owning a plumbing business is not shabby, either.

Try getting a plumber or a electrician in your local neighborhood today. I’m waiting three weeks on an electrician.

News of note

+  The Supreme Court will hear a case on a baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, citing religious objections.

Two reasons to be wary of the cloud and to always have an off-line backup.

+ Microsoft suffered a massive code leak, after Windows 10 source code was posted online anonymously. Microsoft confirmed the leak, which included confidential Windows 10 builds that hackers could have used to find security flaws.

+ Mac malware is surging, according to analysis from security firm McAffee. The number of cases of malware targeting Macs was up 53% in the first quarter.

My favorite off-line backup — a USB thumb drive:

Don’t see Wonder Woman

It’s boring and wooden. It held my attention for a good seven minutes before I wanted to leave. I left after 20 minutes.

I bought Berkshire at 69 and 83 just a few years ago. Too bad you did not listen to me then instead of urging your readers to buy at 165.

Good luck if you ever have an Amazon Prime Pantry order damaged in shipment! My order for 13 items was scheduled to arrive today. No order received! No notice sent to me from Amazon. I went online and checked my order to learn it had been returned by the shipper damaged in transit. I called Amazon Customer Care who confirmed the damage report and that they would refund my money. I told them I wanted the order replaced…after being transferred twice a young lady tried several times to replace the order and could not so was going to simply refund my money and I would have to replace the order from scratch. I explained that I would simply go to my local store and buy what I needed and forget Amazon if that was the kind of service I should expect. I than requested the matter be escalated to a manager and after waiting another 3 minutes for a manager i reiterated my problem. The manager was able to override the system and create a replacement order sans one item. I related my disappointment in Amazon, from whom I buy a lot, and that if that is the way they plan to operate their new grocery business I felt they were headed for a lot of trouble. I felt that customers expect to receive what they ordered…not refunds due to their short comings. For my 33 minutes on the phone they gave me a $15.00 credit on my next order…22 cents per minute of my time…what the hey…I am retired, my time is not worth much any way you look at it!
