Shingles and our superior intelligence

Hot stocks the brokers are pushing include Square, Netflix, Roku, Salesforce, Facebook, IDTI, Apple, Nvidia and HTHT.

Don’t confuse a bull market with your superior intelligence.

Luck beats intelligence every time.

Please get the new Shingles vaccine. It’s a game changer.

From a New York Times health article:

“This really looks to be a breakthrough in vaccinating older adults,” agreed Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, a physician and researcher at the National Institutes of Health.

What’s causing the enthusiasm: Shingrix, which the pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline intends to begin shipping this month. Large international trials have shown that the vaccine prevents more than 90 percent of shingles cases, even at older ages.

The currently available shingles vaccine, called Zostavax, only prevents about half of shingles cases in those over age 60 and has demonstrated far less effectiveness among elderly patients.

Yet those are the people most at risk for this blistering disease, with its often intense pain, its threat to vision and the associated nerve pain that sometimes last months, even years, after the initial rash fades.

Almost all older Americans harbor the varicella zoster virus that causes shingles; they acquired it with childhood chickenpox, whether they knew they had the disease or not.

The virus stays dormant until, for unknown reasons, it erupts decades later. The risk rises sharply after age 50.

Susan came down with Shingles shortly after she got the Zostavax vaccine. It was awful. She was in severe pain for about a month.

Water works.

They’ve turned on the heating. The humidity has disappeared. We’re all feeling funny. I was feeling dizzy yesterday.

Solution: Drink water. Lots of it.

I drank four big glasses yesterday and immediately felt better.

I’m good at obvious.

Dr Google and his “cures”

Medical information on Google is poor, but a good beginning if you’re feeling crook and want to hone up before you visit the doctor.

Good idea: Go to Youtube and search for material. You’ll be surprised. Youtube is alive with helpful information. But Google, which owns Youtube, does a lousy job of search it. Go figure!

Places not to go for tourism

The Arab world is creating weird laws and cracking down.

Don’t go: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Lebanon, and now the UAE.

+ In recent years, the United Arab Emirates has cracked down on social media, making it a crime to criticize the country, its citizens or businesses on Facebook or Twitter. The law has mainly been used to punish domestic critics, but it also swept up Ryan Pate, a helicopter mechanic from Florida, who was jailed after he unleashed a Facebook rant over a sick leave dispute with his employer, Global Aerospace Logistics, a U.A.E. company.

+ Google “holding hands in Dubai” and you see this idiocy:

“Holding hands for a married couple is tolerated but kissing and petting are considered an offence to public decency,” it adds. “Public displays of affection, as well as sexual harassment or randomly addressing women in public places, is liable to be punished by imprisonment or deportation.”

Phishing updated

Reader Glenn says I get so many phishing emails from people pretending to be Apple. I received one this morning. They almost got me last year saying something was wrong with my iCloud. I called Apple and they informed me that they never send out emails specific to certain customers.

Phishing emails are coming from banks, Microsoft and others. They talk of “unusual activity” on your account and the need to verify your account.

Don’t trust your virus checker or malware software to catch this stuff.

Don’t go there. Don’t click. Don’t open attachments.

Hacking is easier, faster and safer than robbing a bank.

When in doubt, pick up the phone and ask “Is this legitimate?”

Just added. Very important:

“If someone receives a phishing email pretending to be Apple, or any other firm, that individual should not call the number provided in the email; instead, she or he should go to the company’s legitimate website to find the a real customer service phone number. Hackers will add a fraudulent phone number in the phishing email (or sometimes a pop-up will even appear on your screen) and when an individual calls that number, the hackers will pretend to be a legitimate call center for the company, and ask for account information and personal information to be verified. This can also occur through telephone calls. If anyone receives a call from an individual pretending to be a legitimate company, they should hang up and call back on a real customer service phone number.”

Tax reform may squeak through

The BIG issue is the deductibility of state, local and real estate taxes. If you own a house or two you won’t be able to deduct their real estate taxes. School taxes are very high in New York State. The non-deductibility could seriously hurt the value of your houses. I’m sending my Senators a letter. You might think of doing the same.

Market research

A handsome man knocks on a door and is greeted by a beautiful young housewife.

“Hello, I’m doing some research for a petroleum jelly manufacturer. Have you ever used the product?”

“Yes. My husband and I use it during sex,” she answers.

The researcher is taken aback. “Um, er, I admire you for your honesty,” he continues. “Can you tell me exactly how you use it?”

“Sure, we put it on the doorknob so the kids can’t get in.”

Harry Newton, who did his chores yesterday afternoon. The lady at the bank was from Poland. My taxidriver was from Kenya. My barber was from Uzbekistan. His assistant was from Kazakhstan. They all did an amazing job, though Susan said he cut my hair “too short” at the back. Susan was happy with the front of it, and the fact that my hair still grows.

Harry, I guess you dismissed my recommendation to by ChromaDex (CDXC) or to look into its fabulous anti aging compound called Niagen.

Believe it or not I feel as though I owed you a good stock pick from years ago when you recommended “Muck Boots”. I STILL LOVE THOSE BOOTS….LOL
