Tech stocks under pressure on Yom Kippur

I missed cannabis and crypto. And Square and Amazon are dropping.

Hence today, Yom Kippur, I’m repenting a little. But only a little. We are up a lot on SQ, AMZN, NFLX, AAPL, CRM, UNH, NVDA and ADBE.

A comdedian once cracked: Yom Kippur is the only time of the year you’ll witness Jews starving.

Yom Kippur is the day of atonement. Leviticus 23:27 states that the Day of Atonement should be one of “self-denial.” So nothing (especially eating) until sundown this evening.

Two astronauts land on Mars. Their mission: to check whether there is Oxygen on the planet “Give me the box of matches” says one. “Either it burns and there is Oxygen, or nothing happens.”

He takes the box, and is ready to strike a match when out of the blue, a Martian appears waving all his arms yelling “No, no, don’t!” and grabbing the match away.

The two guys look at each other, worried. Could there be an unknown explosive gas on Mars? But he takes another match…and now, a crowd of hysterical Martians is coming, all waving their arms yelling “No, no, don’t do that!”

The astronaut says to his buddy, “It looks serious. What are they afraid of? He turns to the Martian and says We mean you no harm but we’re here for Science, to know if man can breathe on Mars”.

Before the Martian can react, he strikes the match, which flames up, burns down, and…nothing happens.

“Why did you try to prevent us from striking a match?”

The leader of the Martians says, “Today is Yom Kippur!”

No one has called me this morning to repent their sins on me. Like losing me money on their garbage real estate developments or biotech “cure-cancer” investments.

For investors like me, religion has been a “tribe” thing. Tribe is good marketing, no matter what religion. I can trust my fellow Jews to be honest, competent and look after my interests. Yes! My experiences have not been good. I’ve gone off the “tribe” thing. My investment analysis is now far more objective and far more cynical.

Remember anyone pitching an investment to you usually gets paid before your money is even invested in the shiny new thing.

Re weakness in SQ and AMZN, I suspect this is the time of year that hedge funds pocket their gains for the year and head for the beach. This year many have done well in SQ, AMZN and our favorite tech stocks.

I don’t think this selling changes the fundamentals — AMZN and SQ are still doing brilliantly.

There is an old Wall Street adage. Sell on Rosh Hashana. Buy on Yom Kippur, i.e. today

BHC — Bausch Health Companies — is an interesting potential turnaround. Worth a small spec. BHC’s boss was on Cramer last night. Here’s the last five years:

Nothing worse than a cranky toilet

Here’s a $13.57 solution.

toiletstuff

It’s called a universal toilet fill valve. It’s easy to install. It will solve leaks and constant running water.

Perfect task for Yom Kippur. We repaired two of them this morning. Click here.

Update your Apple phone to iOS 12.

Go to Settings/Software/Update.

Make sure you’re on WiFi. You may need to reboot a few times.

iOS 12 has some new features. It also seems faster. I put in a order for a new Apple Watch last night.

From what I read, the new iPhones don’t offer much more over my present iPhone 8 plus.

I eyed the new 13 inch MacBook Pro machines last night. Boy, are they beautiful. And boy, are they pricey. My Lenovo ThinkPads are doing just fine.

The Dan Sullivan question

If you and I were to meet three years from today, what would you want to have happened for you, personally and professionally, in order to consider those years a success?

The question comes from a small article, “Your Future Should Be Bigger Than Your Past. Here’s How to Do It.” Click here.

Harry Newton, who has a dear friend called Ed who recommends MMNFF and the ETF called MJ, as two ways to play the cannabis game. I need to research them further. I missed Tilray. I wasn’t smoking the right stuff.
