A few weeks ago, I eyed other high-yielders like MLPs, utilities (I even bought Con Edison) and the telecom yielders (like Verizon and AT&T). But they all carry principal risk — and they demonstrated that handsomely in recent weeks by falling through the floor. And of course, there were my mortgage REITs, which I pushed on you my readers, until they fell through the floor. Maybe I should put even more into these? Individual bonds basically suck. A couple of days ago a broker offered me a handsome, safe triple tax-free muni bond which comes due in March next year and yields the grand sum of 0.75% . Which I thought was totally awful until my friends presented me yesterday with a chart showing muni yields. A 30-year AAA muni bond today yields 2.54%. Whoopee. And, of course, you wouldn’t want to buy it.
