Maybe we’ll find some if this talk of government “shutdown” continues? I like buying on dips that make little sense — e.g. my Boeing buy.<\/p>\n

I don’t think they’ll shut the government down. There are actually politicians who think closing it down is a bad idea.<\/p>\n

Remember: Washington is eight square miles surrounded by reality.<\/p>\n

Random “learns”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

+ There are a zillion products you can do a “Warby Parker” on — Design a better, more elegant, cheaper, product that’s better marketed. Getting buzz is the key. The rule is: One dollar on engineering; ten on marketing. If you want to go low-end, check out ZenniOptical, my favorite place for cheap glasses.<\/p>\n

+ A firms piles up data on their customers, interpreting it — called data analytics — is the big new opportunity area.<\/p>\n

+ I’m sick of executives telling me they don’t understand computers. To succeed, they think, all they need to do is to hire talented techies. It’s bullshit. You gotta learn this stuff.<\/p>\n

+ Not every one has to learn how to program like a pro, but knowing the elements and implications of it sure help.<\/p>\n

+ Take the stairs. They’re good for you.<\/p>\n

+ Buy theater tickets at the box office. You’ll get much and cheaper better seats than buying online.<\/p>\n

+ Nelson DeMille is our favorite author for listening to in the car. Only buy the unabridged audio CDs. Our favorite is The Gold Coast.<\/em><\/p>\n

+ Don’t expect people to respond to your emails. They get too many of them. Try an old-fashioned medium — the telephone. It’s nice to hear a friendly voice.<\/p>\n

+ Renew your web sites. If you don’t, you’ll lose them. Someone else will pounce on them and try and sell them to you. That will be expensive.<\/p>\n

+ Check. Check. Check.<\/strong> I bundled up all my old glasses to send to New Eyes<\/em>. As UPS was about to take them away, I realized I’d also bundled in my only good pair of glasses. Dumb me. Check. Check. Check. Good motto.<\/p>\n

+ Flattery works. Whether sincere or not. All of my readers are intelligent enough to understand the value of flattery. Everyone wants to believe the flatter is genuine. All mine are.<\/p>\n

+ Never trust an expert, especially a doctor or a lawyer. Always learn enough yourself to be dangerous.<\/p>\n

+ Always back your work up at least once a day.<\/p>\n

+ Don’t believe “reviews” on the Internet. Often they’re written by the seller.<\/p>\n

+ Gold is getting a bad rap. Which may be just the reason to buy a little.<\/p>\n

Chicken Surprise<\/strong><\/span>
\nA couple go for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and order the “Chicken Surprise.” The waiter brings the meal, served in a cast iron pot.<\/p>\n

Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid of the pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady little eyes looking around before the lid slams back down.<\/p>\n

“Good grief, did you see that?” she asks her husband. He hadn’t, so she asks him to look in the pot. He reaches for it and again the lid rises, and he sees two little eyes looking at him before it slams down.<\/p>\n

Pperturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains what is happening, and demands an explanation.<\/p>\n

“Please sir,” says the waiter, “what you order?”<\/p>\n

The husband replies, “Chicken Surprise”.<\/p>\n

“Ah! So sorry,” says the waiter, “I bring you Peeking Duck .”<\/p>\n
