Sometimes BubbleVision just get too focused on the “news,” like Apple’s new deal with China Mobile, says he yawning.<\/p>\n Latest techie stuff:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n 1. If you lose a FiOS phone line, reboot the Optical Network Terminal. (OTN) sitting in your closet. Unplug it and the backup battery. Count to 4,345 (or whatever). Plug it and the battery back in.<\/p>\n 2. Blue Screen of Death on your Windows machine? Don’t bother trying to figure out what went wrong — you never will. Use System Restore<\/strong>. Go back to a time a week or two ago.<\/p>\n 3. Don’t leave millions of precious photos on the SD card in your shiny new digital camera. Copy the photos to somewhere else. SD cards blow up. Figure $900 to have your card recovered. I don’t make this up.<\/p>\n 4. Don’t expect your laptop’s sleep mode to work reliably. Often it resumes with a locked up mouse. Solution: Do Alt-F4 several times. The second or third time it will have unlocked itself and you’ll be ready to work. Never, ever put your laptop to sleep without saving all your work. And never use Hibernation.<\/p>\n 5. My friends are buying iPads and various tablets because they’re light, portable and will do everything a normal (more expensive, heavier) laptop will do. Wrong. Tablets are compromises. I can’t type quickly on an iPad. I can’t research and write this column on my iPad. I can’t run three external monitors from an iPad. I can read more comfortably on my laptop because I don’t have to hold it. I use a Lenovo X230 laptop. Susan loves her iPad and uses it constantly. Increasingly she runs her life on her iPhone 5S — email, calendar, contacts, etc. Different strokes for different folks. You need to figure your needs.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Microsoft is firing on all cylinders. My understanding of what these people do is they convince you that money you have in a bank account is “bad.” And you’d be much better off if you let them take care of the money for you.<\/p>\n Sounds like a pitch I’ve heard from more than one money manager.<\/p>\n If my readers want the research into this advisor, I’ll make an appointment. Should be a hoot.
