1. Health.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Elements:<\/p>\n

+ Stay thin.
\n+ Nap regularly.
\n+ Don’t take anything long-term. That means smoking tobacco or marijuana or ingesting dietary supplements long term. That’s the key — short-term, get high but lay off quickly.
\n+ Exercise. Any exercise that gets your heart rate about 100 will work.
\n+ Don’t believe doctors. Research your problems and discuss them intelligently. It’s your body, not theirs.
\n+ Don’t invest in things that will cause you stress long-term. That’s the key — long-term. If you’re stressing, sell it. Good to invest in things with an easy way out. But there are things in the middle — like getting a miserable job, marrying a miserable person, to investing in a fund with no end — like ones I invested in from Goldman Sachs and Citigroup.<\/p>\n

Selling is the greatest stress-reliever ever invented. If you can’t sell — no matter the price — you get long-term agita. And that’s killing.<\/p>\n

2. Trust.<\/strong><\/span> Only work with people you trust 1000%.<\/p>\n

Gerry Friesen is the most honest person in the entire world. He was my partner for twenty years. I lucked out.<\/p>\n

These days I look at people to help manage my money. I worked with Gerry for two years before we became 50-50 partners for the next twenty years. Since then, time has speeded up. Now I’m expected to make million dollar decisions based on pretty sheets that show performance data — how well the manager did in good times. I ask around and go in slowly and gently. I say NO a lot.<\/p>\n

It’s not easy. I’ve been with Francis Greenburger for over 30 years. You couldn’t find anyone more honest — not only in the way he treats me — one of his partner\/investors — but in the way he presents opportunities to me.<\/p>\n

Once he presented a shopping center investment to me. It was in Lettuce Patch, Iowa or close thereby. I complained, “It’s boring!<\/p>\n

He smiled and said “It is what it is.”<\/p>\n

There’ll be good times. There’ll be bad times.<\/p>\n

I judge the syndicators\/managers\/hedgies (whatever you call them) by how they tell me they’re tackling the bad times.<\/p>\n

Francis G. is magnificent at explaining the few — very few\u00a0 — bad times we’ve had together. I appreciate that more than the good times. I know how hard it is tell your partners of bad times.<\/p>\n
