If your stock falls 15% from where you bought it, you should sell it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Some stocks will bounce back and go back and above what you paid. But, on average, you&#8217;re better off sticking to this inviolate rule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If your stock falls 15%, but is still above what you paid for it, you need to figure out: Is this a long-term problem or a short term problem?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Remember recently, I said dump BABA (Alibaba) and all Chinese stocks. My blog was titled<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><em>How two Chinese companies illustrate my core investing principles. Today\u2019s key takeaway: Sell your Alibaba (BABA) shares instantly, if not sooner. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyinvestor.com\/?p=53851\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>here.<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since then all the leading Chinese stocks have fallen. BABA is down 16%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Grow older. Figure what you understand and what you don&#8217;t.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I long ago figured pharma and biotech are &#8220;too hard.&#8221; I&#8217;m not in the industry. I don&#8217;t devour the medical literature. Item:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cramer and others have been pounding the table for a company call Emergent Biosolutions (EBS). It&#8217;s the picks and shovels of the pharma biz. And it tells a great story. But it screws up big-time. Search &#8220;Emergent&#8221; at the NYTimes web site and you get these horrible stories:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54070\" src=\"https:\/\/www.technologyinvestor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Emergent.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"494\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Never buy stocks on margin<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Every major post-war financial crisis has been caused by too much borrowing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Borrowing money is designed to juice your investment returns. Borrow $80 on a $100 stock, which goes to $120. Bingo your return is not a miserable 20%, it&#8217;s a handsome 75% (assuming you paid $5 interest on the $80). If your $100 stock falls to say $70, you &#8216;ve lost your $100 and owe your bank $10. That&#8217;s a sure way to go broke.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yesterday I wrote about the desperate, greedy morons in the banking industry who got taken big-time by a Archegos Capital Management, a\u00a0<a title=\"Family office\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Family_office\">family office<\/a>\u00a0capital management firm run by\u00a0<a title=\"Bill Hwang\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Hwang\">Bill Hwang<\/a>. This stuff fascinates me,\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-jcdt_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Here&#8217;s the beginning of Wikipedia&#8217;s entry on Archegos:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">On 26 March 2021, Archegos defaulted on\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Margin call\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margin_call\">margin calls<\/a>\u00a0from several global\u00a0<a title=\"Investment banking\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Investment_banking\">investment banks<\/a>, including\u00a0<a title=\"Credit Suisse\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Credit_Suisse\">Credit Suisse<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Nomura Holdings\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nomura_Holdings\">Nomura Holdings<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-sfdt_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-jcwsj_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<a title=\"Goldman Sachs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goldman_Sachs\">Goldman Sachs<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Morgan Stanley\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morgan_Stanley\">Morgan Stanley<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-bbgnp_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archegos_Capital_Management#cite_note-bbgnp-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archegos_Capital_Management#cite_note-:0-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The fund had large, concentrated positions in\u00a0<a title=\"ViacomCBS\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ViacomCBS\">ViacomCBS<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Baidu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baidu\">Baidu<\/a>, and other companies,<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archegos_Capital_Management#cite_note-:1-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and the firm&#8217;s use of\u00a0<a title=\"Total return swap\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Total_return_swap\">total return swaps<\/a>\u00a0had helped to hide its high exposure from lending banks. Its derivative contracts &#8220;exposed the firm to severe losses when the trades went bad.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_7-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0<i>Wall Street Journal<\/i>\u00a0reported that Hwang lost $8<span class=\"nowrap\">\u00a0<\/span>billion in ten days.<sup id=\"cite_ref-wsj-zcf-04-2021_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s an earlier one on over-borrowing from 1998 (also from Wikipedia):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><b>Long-Term Capital Management L.P.<\/b>\u00a0(<b>LTCM<\/b>) was a\u00a0<a title=\"Hedge fund\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hedge_fund\">hedge fund<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-FinancialHistory_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Long-Term_Capital_Management#cite_note-FinancialHistory-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0based in\u00a0<a title=\"Greenwich, Connecticut\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greenwich,_Connecticut\">Greenwich<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Connecticut\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Connecticut\">Connecticut<\/a>\u00a0that used\u00a0<a title=\"Absolute return\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Absolute_return\">absolute return<\/a>\u00a0trading strategies combined with high financial\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"Leverage (finance) in derivatives instruments (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Leverage_(finance)_in_derivatives_instruments&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">leverage<\/a>. LTCM was founded in 1994 by\u00a0<a title=\"John Meriwether\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Meriwether\">John Meriwether<\/a>, the former vice-chairman and head of\u00a0<a title=\"Bond (finance)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bond_(finance)\">bond<\/a>\u00a0trading at\u00a0<a title=\"Salomon Brothers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salomon_Brothers\">Salomon Brothers<\/a>. Members of LTCM&#8217;s board of directors included\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Myron S. Scholes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Myron_S._Scholes\">Myron S. Scholes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Robert C. Merton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_C._Merton\">Robert C. You don&#8217;t need to be web whiz. But you need to know how sites and the web work. What&#8217;s a good site. And what&#8217;s a bad site. Learn HTML. It&#8217;s easy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">+\u00a0Excel. It&#8217;s still useful<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">+ Learn what the cloud can do for you. Spend some time on <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aws.amazon.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Canadian burial<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper&#8217;s cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn&#8217;t know what else to do, so I started to play.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I&#8217;ve never played before for this homeless man.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And as I played &#8220;Amazing Grace&#8221;, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car.
