I.e., it&#8217;s time to take profits and lock in gains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Similarly, whenever you start to mope about a recent downturn in the stock market and tell your readers that they should go out and start a new business, it means the market has bottomed and is about to move sharply higher. I.e., it&#8217;s time to back up the truck and buy depressed shares.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So now, you know all. If I say Black, it&#8217;s White.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today I&#8217;m saying Grey. Keep reading. See why.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>We buy a Tesla Y<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Michael researched the main alternatives &#8212; Ford and Volkswagen &#8212; to death. The conclusion: Tesla&#8217;s the best. We bought the long-haul, the color grey and a tow hitch (for bicycles). That&#8217;s it in the way of options. No idea when we&#8217;ll get the car. Maybe two months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Meantime, the New York Times reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">An electric trickle is turning into a flood: As many as 100 new E.V. models are coming to showrooms by 2025. Heavyweights including Volkswagen, General Motors and Ford are floating promises of all-electric lineups within a decade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In short, your next car <strong>will<\/strong> be electric. You&#8217;d better start planning for it now by installing a 240 volt plug on the outside of your house.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Tesla car gets excellent reviews. Best of all, I&#8217;ve made enough on the Tesla stock to buy several of their cars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>I never did buy any bitcoin &#8212; Now I know why<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today&#8217;s Wall Street Journal:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54258\" src=\"https:\/\/www.technologyinvestor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/wsj-bitcoin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">A sudden recent drop in the price of bitcoin suggests the digital currency\u2019s yearlong rally might finally be running out of steam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Bitcoin fell as much as 17% on Saturday to $52,149, with about half the decline occurring in about 20 minutes late in the evening Eastern Time. Although it recovered some of those losses by Monday morning, the price has steadily declined this week. It was trading at $49,334 early Friday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<p><a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/cryptocurrencies-soar-to-records-ahead-of-coinbase-listing-11618400809?mod=searchresults_pos12&amp;page=1&amp;mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin topped out at $64,829 on April 14<\/a>, the same day\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/COIN\">Coinbase Global<\/a><span class=\"company-name-type\">\u00a0Inc.,<\/span>\u00a0<a class=\"media-object-chiclet up\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/COIN?mod=chiclets\" data-channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/225893452\/composite\" data-symbol=\"COIN\" data-changepercent=\"0.40\">COIN\u00a0<span class=\"\">+0.32%<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>the biggest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange,\u00a0<a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coinbase-shares-surge-in-trading-debut-11618421619?mod=searchresults_pos1&amp;page=2&amp;mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went public in a highly anticipated offering<\/a>. The two events marked the pinnacle of a heady rally for cryptocurrencies that began last year. Bitcoin\u2019s price more than tripled in 2020 and doubled to start 2021 before slipping.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-content-main\">Yet that momentum lately has been showing signs of flagging, said Michael Oliver of the research firm Momentum Structural Analysis. Since bitcoin crossed $60,000 in March for the first time, its pace of gains has slowed and it has traded in a relatively narrow range. That was a sign, he said, that the rally could falter, as it finally did over the weekend.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\u201cWe think bitcoin\u2019s broken for the time being,\u201d he said, pointing to technical trend lines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">The dramatic weekend crash underscored the fragility of bitcoin\u2019s recent advance. It is unclear what triggered the selloff, which according to the data provider CoinMarketCap wiped out nearly $220 billion of value in cryptocurrencies in an hour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Some traders pointed to a rumor on Twitter that the Treasury Department was preparing to charge several financial institutions for allegedly using cryptocurrencies to launder money, which was picked up by some media outlets. A department spokeswoman declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Whatever sparked the initial bout of selling, traders agree that it accelerated because of the implosion of enormous amounts of leveraged bets that investors had placed on overseas, lightly regulated cryptocurrency-derivatives exchanges.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-object type-InsetRichText wrap scope-web article__inset article__inset--type-InsetRichText article__inset--wrap\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\" data-layout=\"wrap \" data-layout-mobile=\"\">\n<div class=\"media-object-rich-text\">In all, traders lost $10.1 billion on Sunday to liquidations by crypto exchanges, according to the data provider Bybt. More than 90% of the funds liquidated that day came from bullish bets on bitcoin or other digital currencies, Bybt data show, and nearly $5 billion of the liquidations took place on one exchange, Binance, the world\u2019s biggest crypto exchange by trading volume.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">As the price of bitcoin tumbled, many of those bets were automatically liquidated, adding more downward pressure on the price and leading to a vicious cycle of further liquidations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-body-ad-placement\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"PLACEMENT_wsj-body-AD_RE\" class=\"wsj-body-ad\">Some crypto traders were wiped out with little warning.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Jasim, an engineer in Kuwait who declined to give his last name, said he was awakened by an alert on his phone at about 5 a.m. local time Sunday. He watched anxiously as Binance liquidated some of his trades, and then he closed out others with steep losses. In all, he said he lost about $9,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">It wasn\u2019t a new experience for Jasim, whose positions have been liquidated several times since he got into crypto in 2017. \u201cBeing greedy is the problem,\u201d he said. Jasim has resumed trading but plans to be more careful about risk management in the future.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-object type-InsetDynamic inline scope-web|mobileapps article__inset article__inset--type-InsetDynamic article__inset--inline\" style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\" data-layout=\"inline \" data-layout-mobile=\"\">\n<p>Exchanges such as Binance let individual investors deposit a relatively small amount of money upfront to place an outsize bet. For instance, suppose a trader buys futures that pay off if bitcoin rises against the U.S. dollar. If bitcoin climbs, the trader\u2019s profit could be many times greater than what could have been made simply by buying bitcoin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">But if bitcoin falls, the trader can be on the hook for big losses, and must quickly top off the account with fresh funds, or else the exchange will automatically liquidate the trader\u2019s holdings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\u201cYou have potential for a series of cascading liquidations, happening back to back to back,\u201d said Chris Zuehlke, global head of Cumberland, the crypto-trading unit of Chicago-based DRW Holdings LLC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Adding to the weekend\u2019s chaos, some exchanges, including Binance, reported glitches in the midst of heavy trading volumes. Traders said their inability to access exchanges dried up liquidity\u2014which was already thin over the weekend\u2014and exacerbated price moves. A Binance spokesman said, \u201cIn instances where we may have experienced outages, we aim to learn from them to prevent further occurrence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Offshore crypto-derivatives exchanges offer individual investors high degrees of leverage. At Binance, for instance, investors can get leverage of 125 to 1 for some futures contracts, meaning they can deposit just 80 cents to amass the equivalent of $100 of bitcoin. By comparison, an investor trading bitcoin futures on CME Group Inc., a regulated U.S. exchange, would need to deposit at least $38 and would likely be required to post more margin by their brokerage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">The Binance spokesman said that the exchange recently reduced the amount of leverage it offers on many products and that only a few users were using 125-to-1 leverage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Still, traders said the swiftness of the weekend selloff underscores the role of heavily leveraged bets\u2014many of them by individual investors\u2014in fueling this year\u2019s cryptocurrency rally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\u201cAt its core, bitcoin is still heavily driven by retail, who choose to use a lot of leverage,\u201d said Rich Rosenblum, president of the crypto-trading firm GSR.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Among other signs of bitcoin\u2019s flagging momentum: signs of waning demand among institutional investors and the tepid performance of Coinbase since its debut last week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">The number of large bitcoin transactions, which are typically made by professional money managers, dropped slightly in the first quarter from the fourth quarter, according to a report from the crypto exchange OKEx. And assets held under management by the industry\u2019s fund providers fell 4.5% to $56 billion in April from March, according to the research firm CryptoCompare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">While Coinbase\u2019s debut was a flag-planting event for the industry, it might have also been a cue for investors to take some profits. The company was the first major crypto firm to test public markets in the U.S. and fetched a monster valuation of $85 billion on its first day of trading. But its shares have fallen in six of its seven sessions as a public company, closing Thursday at $293.45,\u00a0<a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coinbase-stock-price-valuation-and-everything-else-you-need-to-know-11618413312?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">down from its opening price of $381<\/a>\u00a0on April 14.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">Bitcoin peaked the same day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-object type-InsetMediaVideo header scope-web|mobileapps article__inset article__inset--type-InsetMediaVideo article__inset--header\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-layout=\"header \" data-layout-mobile=\"\">You can read the full article plus the gruesome charts.
