Solid dividend-ruler stocks and a Contest for the worst investment ever

UBS follows what it calls “Dividend Ruler Stocks.” This is their latest list:

DividendRulerStocks

This shows how well UBS’s Dividend Ruler Stocks have done — nicely.

TotalReturn

UBS regularly adds and subtracts companies from the list based on how it feels about the companies’ prospects. So this is not simply buying the highest dividend payers. They also measure how the company expands its dividends over time — something they call “Dividend 10-Year CAGR.”

A dear friend has his money managed by UBS under this Dividend Ruler program and he’s pleased with the long-term results.

UBS also has a program where they invest your money equally in ten or sectors — bonds, big stocks, emerging markets, etc. — and then re-balances your portfolio once a year. Rebalancing means selling a little of the winners and putting more into the losers. The way I’m explaining it sounds stupid. But it does OK — given that different sectors do differently from one year to the next.

I’m always wary of “systems” for picking stocks. But I’m seriously intrigued by UBS’s Dividend Ruler stocks. Here’s their latest piece. It’s worth reading. Click UBSDividendRulerStocks.

A contest for the worst investment ever. Here are the candidates:

+ A gay bar in Uganda.

+ A shopping center in La Quinta California in which your anchor tenant is a thrift shop.

+ A fully rented shopping center in Rhode Island with Radio Shack, Sears, KMart, Blockbuster, JC Penney, Fortunoffs, and Filene’s Basement as the tenants.

Please add your candidates in the Comments below. We’ll award some appropriate prizes in the next few days.

Harry Newton who has a definition in his dictionary: The Second Time. It’s five minute to do something the second time. It’s 6:30 AM in California. My partner wants to avoid the heat. Hence play early. It’s pitch black outside. I mean really pitch black. Is this what’s called being hoisted on your own petard? That expression is fascinating. A petard was a bomb old-time warriors attached to the doors to cities they were sieging. The idea was to get out of the way before you were blown by your own bomb. Apparently many pertardieres lost their lives with their own bombs. I gather the key was to stay low and move sideways and quickly.

Bad investment a fully leased office/retail building with a bookstore, printer, film processor, travel agency, movie theater, newspaper/book publisher, post office and a graphic design firm.

I don’t have any other candidates, but I have a suggestion for the prize. A 3 week* vacation on Carnival Cruise Lines.

*3 weeks or until fire, the onset of infectious disease, loss of sanitary facilities, loss of power or running aground…… whichever comes first.
