When stocks fall from favor, they really fall in today’s yuchy stockmarket.
And the lesson? Our inviolate Stop Loss Rule.
Now this is a receipt: And what a receipt! You want a limo. You open the app on your iPhone.
“You want a pick up where you are?” It asks.
It knows exactly where you are because of the iPhone’s GPS. You say “Yes.” Two minutes later a nice fellow calls me and tells me he’s driving the big black limo that’s flashing its lights in the JetBlue Arrivals spot, about 50 feet from where I’m standing. Two seconds later I’m out of there, on my way back to civilization (Manhattan).. I arrive at home, leave the limo. An hour later I receive Uber’s wonderful receipt by email:
Not cheap. But, oh, such great service! Price includes the tip. The driver is happy with the price.
New Flying tips. From yesterday’s one-day New York to Fort Lauderdale trip:
+ Bring a double power adapter along. All the outlets in the terminal are being used. A double adapter will let you charge your iPhone and run your laptop.
+ Take as little luggage as possible. Between grotesquely obese passengers and the huge luggage they wheel on, there is no space in the overhead compartments. My favorite conversation from last night’s flight:
Harry: Would you mind not banging me every time you walk by?
Fat passenger: Move your arm.
+ Don’t sit in the front row. There’s nowhere to put your luggage.
+ Every flight is late. The delays get longer as the day wears on. The minute you have a delay, go look for another flight. Never ever book on the last flight of the day.
+ Free WiFi is agonizingly slow. Take your own. My Verizon 4G MiFi unit played slow at the Fort Lauderdale airport, but much faster than the free airport WiFi.
+ Cheap $2 plastic ear plugs are wonderful. They aren’t perfect. But they cut the babble from the antique Russian babushka sitting next to me.
+ Take a Kindle. An escapist junk book — like Fifty Shades of Grey — makes time fly.
Harry Newton who sees the signs of an improving economy: Jammed planes. Construction boom in Boston. My daughter tells me her builder is suddenly waiting for building permits. A little while back, you put in an applicaiton. It came back the next day. Now “the Boston Building Department is insane. It’s swamped.” You can easily wait a week.

I met the VP of Uber at a restaurant in Chicago over a year ago and he told us about the company because my wife and I needed a way to get home (the restaurant was in the middle of no where). Now we use Uber all the time. What a brilliant idea and I love how you can track where your driver is. Not sure about New York City but now you can Uber taxis rather than limos which cuts the cost down…Also, if you are ever in Chicago eat at the restaurant where I met the Uber VP – it’s called El Ideas and probably the best restaurant in Chicago.
Can you send me the name of the Uber VP, please? I’m interested in pursuing the story a little further. And the company is not responding to its press contacts person email. thanks
*those.
Yuchy stock market? To who? People like you who are in cash? I’m up somewhere between 15 and 20% YTD. In addition to general market move up from Jan 1, I also bought JP Morgan ACI, Berkshire-Hathaway and WMT when they were at or near their lows for the year, and am up sharply in thoes.
I’m proud of you. Why didn’t you drop a Comment on this blog and share your good ideas with all of us? Trust me. Share.
Oh, I did. I was “Fred” at the time. I’m sure my recommendations fell on deaf ears since this appears to be a site for doomers and political zealots.
