A Chromebook, an iPad, a Microsoft Surface Pro 3, a laptop or an iPhone?
You now have major choices if you want something portable. I use a laptop — a ThinkPad X230 — and an iPhone 5. My main criterion is the keyboard. Laptops tend to have the best. But my friend Frank Derfler loves his Chromebook which has one big plus: It’s much cheaper than a laptop. He says it’s basically a Wi-Fi device. Without Wi-Fi, it’s not especially useful. Read about Chromebooks on Amazon.
Should I own a sports team? Don Sterling bought the Clippers in 1981 for $12.5 million. Forbes valued the team at $575 million before the sale to Steve Ballmer (of Microsoft fame) for $2 billion. That’s a compounded return of 14.2% — ignoring any dividends along the way. Which probably didn’t happen. Most sports teams are not profitable. Owning a sports team is at the top of the list for “big boys toys”, so the saying goes.
Better that Ballmer messes up the Clippers than Microsoft. Meantime, my friends at Microsoft tell me they’re not feeling the new guy’s presence. Sadly, he’s not an entrepreneur. He’s been a Microsoft company man for eons.

Mary Meeker is positive on Internet innovation. Tell your kids to look at her PowerPoints. Maybe they have another Uber in their imagination? Mary also has slides in her presentation showing the plummeting cost of starting an Internet business, and the incredible psychic and monetary rewards.

Unfortunately, the VA Medical system is a government run – centrally dictated – operation and a predictor of where the Affordable Care Act is taking us. The privilege few along with their government collaborators will have their own far better system, no surprise. For the rest, when you take the patient out of the decision process and eliminate real choice, you are guaranteed the mess and dishonesty that we now, finally(!), see in the VA disgrace. A disgrace that existed for at least ten years. The solution is not more money, but competitive choice.
