Stockmarkets are turning sour. There are reasons:
+ The “hot” stocks are turning sharply down. The techie ones.
+ Overseas. Russia. Europe. China. Their ails are detailed in a zillion places.
+ Valuations are high — P/Es, etc. Several observers have written pieces with charts and circles and arrows on them.
+ It’s December. The vast majority of hedge funds have done awfully in 2014. Hedge fund investors are giving notice. To finance the redemptions, many hedge funds are dumping stocks — some they’ve lost money on, some they’re up on.
+ The hot airlines are crashing — AAL, DAL and LUV. they were hot when oil was crashing. Now it’s still crashing, they’re down. Someone has figured out that most airlines are hedged on jet fuel and its drop may actually cost them money?
+ It “feels” like a turning point to many learned stock market gurus. You’re reading the same negative stuff I’m reading. No sense in repeating it.
Strategy? It’s a personal thing. For one, definitely dump the ones that have now dropped 8% to 10%. Dump the ones where the story seems to have changed, viz. Google. Dump the ones where the chart looks plain awful, viz. BABA.
Some stocks bear watching — AAPL, GILD, AMGN,
Some stocks should be sold now, because their charts look awful — GPRO.
Good idea to look at the charts on all the stocks you own, and see which are breaking down.
You should obviously not be in any oil or oil service stocks. We’ve talked about that before.
I suspect the key is buy back in later in December. I say that. knowing that timing the market never works.
I pray that Microsoft might get intelligent, soon. Maybe the new management will inject some customer-friendliness into its brain? For now, I can only think of bad four letter words. I spent too many hours trying in the last few days trying to be nice to my daughter. She needed a Windows machine reliably running Word and Excel. Office 2013 has awful reviews. And you have to rent it with a monthly fee!
Office 2010 is fine, but buying it is amazingly difficult. You can’t buy Office 2010 from Microsoft. You’re left with the online riff-raff. One online seller took my money and never delivered it. I’ve filed a formal bitch on PayPal. I bet I’ll never get the money back. I finally got it from a place called Software King. Click here. I bought the Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student – 1 Install (Download Delivery). It didn’t contain Outlook which she didn’t want, but it contained Word and Excel which she did. Meantime you open Word. At the very top of the page you see this delicious Microsoft threat:
I have no idea what it means. But it’s very annoying. In 50 years of buying software, I’ve never seen words like that on software. Especially software I paid good money for.
There’s always a gotcha in dealing with Microsoft!!!!!
Saddest story I’ve read in eons. “He Loved Her in Health and, Prosecutor Says, Raped Her in Sickness.” It’s hard to know why the state of Iowa is wasting their money on this sadness.
Read the Bloomberg story here.

Harry Newton, who’s in wet, cold, blistery New York. A bit like today’s markets. My fault. Should have stayed in California.

You are advocating the dumping of Google? REally???? And you want us to dump Delta??
Harry, with all the dumping of stocks, many of them good, that you do all the time your tax bill must be ginormous.
