Don’t mess with the Fed, nor Sophie

Thank you Janet Yellen. She’s upbeat on the economy. She’ll hold rates until mid 2015. She used the word “patient.”

Cheap money in an upbeat economy is good.

After yesterday’s strong move, we’re now above the 50 day moving average — red line. The 200-day moving average is blue. The chart is year to date (YTD).

I have a sneaking suspicion that Google is now a “buy.” Hard to see it falling much further.

I replaced many Radio Shack batteries last night. They were all on their last legs. Then, I wondered where was the stock?

On its last legs also? Yup!

RSHYTD

What an amazing chart. Not the stock you wanted to own this year. I thought about shorting it when it was $1.

Stay away from overseas. I’m not talented enough to figure Russia, Brazil, India or China. Hence I keep away.

But many won’t. Russia is offering 17% on your money. Switzerland is offering minus 0.25%. Switzerland charges you money to keep your money in Switzerland. Russia rewards you — but not enough even at 17%. Remember, what Sergey Brinn said, “Russia is Nigeria with snow.”

My father once put money into Mexico at 14%. It later devalued and he lost most of the money.

Tonight is the last night of The Colbert Report. He’s one of America’s most talented comedians and certainly one of my and Susan’s favorites. We watch him every night.

Colbert

The last show begins at 11:30 EST on The Comedy Channel. You can read more about him in yesterday’s New York Times.Wonderful paragraph from that piece:

Mr. Colbert appeared in character not simply on his show, but in appearances elsewhere, including a memorable knockout performance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 2006. (He stirred Bush administration outrage with comments like: “I believe the government that governs best is the government that governs least, and by these standards, we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq.”) He even remained at his blowhard best when he testified before Congress in 2010. (Before a Congressional subcommittee on immigration issues and farm labor, Mr. Colbert’s character said things like, “Maybe the easier answer is just to have scientists develop vegetables that pick themselves.”)

Just what I need early in the morning. Larry Summers discussing a subject he (as usual) knows nothing about:

I love Janet Yellen and her cheap money. It keeps me from buying a new car, fancy clothes or visiting exotic places around the globe. Or buying a second house in southern California like some people I know :-). It’s that wonderful interest rate, is it 1 or 1.5% now? Maybe Russia’s 17% is not such a bad deal – they even have a strong leader, a jerk, but strong jerk. Well, we have part of that description.

Harry, just wondering how you and your friends who went to “all cash” feel when the market is up 5 percent or so in two days? How hard is it for an investor who sit there knowing that he bailed at absolutely the wrong time? This is a sincere question. I have no idea what it feels like. Unlike your friends, I buy when there’s blood in the streets.

“My recommended solution”… is a Chromebook. No malware, no antivirus software needed, no irritating updates to Java or other bloodsucking utilities. Actually, no updates ever. The whole unit available for just under $200. (Plus the cost of a decent HDMI monitor if you don’t have one) Harry, you punish yourself so much by being a Luddite about the “Cloud”.
