The leg is for shooting

Forget your competition. Everyone shoots themselves in their leg.

1. Don’t invest in obviously dumb companies. See below.

2. Diversify your investments. This limits your exposure to potentially dumb companies.

3. Invest only in your own own ventures . This way you can learn, and move on. Something big companies seem to have great difficulty with.

The PC biz stinks. I know one reason: It’s called Intel. They’ve lost the plot. I know another reason: Lenovo. It’s also lost the plot.

Once upon a time, I used to buy a new laptop every six to nine months. Intel had made a new, faster chip and Lenovo had made a new, faster machine.

No more.

I bought a ThinkPad X230 in 2012. Since then, Lenovo has introduced the X240 and the X250. The newest X250 has a “fifth generation” i7 Intel processor, which is no faster nor better than the “third generation” I have in my X230. If you don’t believe me, go to Intel’s incomprehensible web site and see if you can find any meaningful difference.

Much worse, I bought my X230 with 16 gigabytes of RAM memory. The new X240 and X250 machines come with only 8 gigabytes of RAM memory. Less memory means less speed and less ability to handle multiple software programs. I called six of my best Lenovo contacts this morning for an explanation. All my calls went into voice mail. No one cares enough to answer their phone.

Their sales department told me that 8 gigs was the way it was. (They didn’t know why.) And I should suck it up. Meantime, all the customer reviews on Lenovo own website complain about the miserly 8 gigs of RAM.

In desperation, I bought a second hand X230 on eBay. Works fine.

Two financials look better. I was right about buying NLY at $10.50. It’s now $10.875 and still yielding 11%. LADR is $18.93 and yielding 5.4%. It will inch up as it lifts its dividend, which it will.

This looks fun:
