My biggest (and most constant) mistake investing

I fall in love with the idea. I want it to happen. I really want it to happen. The product or service is so good. Here’s my latest favorite gadget. If only I had invented it I would be rich beyond my wildest dreams.

So, what is it?

It’s a bagel cutter.

Clearly, I’m not about to make this product. But you get the idea. Someone already has. They’re raising a company. And I’m going to invest. I love the product so much.

But there’s the management, the marketing, the financing, the distribution, etc. All the things than can go wrong.

The bulk of startups fail.

Hence don’t invest in the company because you like the product or the service — like I’ve done on so many occasions. Too many occasions. Stand back. Do your due diligence. Mull a little. Then mull some more.

Then say NO.

Useful iPhone Tips

+ WiFi calling increases your bars from one to five.

+ Announce calls. Tells you who is calling.

+ Respond with text. Sends a message to an incoming caller that “I’ll call you sh

+ Call blocking. Block people whose call you don’t want. Sadly, it doesn’t always work with junk and spam calls.

+ A Mophie extends your battery life. They will be out with their iPhone 7 models shortly. (I hope.)

+ FaceTime video calls are tops for keeping up with grandchildren. It lets you see how they grow. (Too fast.)

+ Photo stream. Shares pictures of children automatically among all family members with an iPhone.

+ WAZE is best for car travel.

+ Kindle for the iPhone is easiest for reading in bed. Doesn’t disturb the wife.

+ Please protect your cell number. It’s as important as your Social Security number. It’s the backup for passwords, on all sorts of forms, and connected to all sorts of databases. People protect their Social Security numbers, but don’t think twice about handing out their cellphone number.

Useful holiday stuff

+ www.CatalogChoice.org lets you opt out of paper catalogs. Here’s my 6 1/2 inch pile of catalogs I received in the past week. It’ s ridiculous. They’re all going in the trash.

catalogs

+ Amazon sells everything. Always try them first. They’re not the cheapest, especially for heavy stuff, like tennis balls.

Useful PC stuff

+ Google Chrome is the best browser. Easiest to synch your bookmarks among your multiple laptops and PCs.

+ The Samsung 850 PRO solid state drive (SSD) is the best way of speeding up your laptop.

+ Don’t use a cheap, crappy conference service for your next conference. I just spend 90 minutes on a conference I could barely hear a word on.

Best travel tip

+ Enroll in TSA PreCHK. Save standing in line with your fellow deplorables.

I once had an ER doc tell me that a major problem in their emergency center was people cutting their hands while slicing bagels on Saturday morning. “It’s the only time it happens” he said.

I hope you recycle those catalogs and not just throw them in the garbage. I am not the biggest save the earth moron but our landfills are growing.
