Nafta goes next

Conventional wisdom is the “wisdom” of the crowds. At one stage it believed in free trade. And it was right. Nafta boosted trade:

NonPetroleumTrade

Now it doesn’t believe in free trade. It believes free trade “can aggravate inequality, degrade labor and health standards and weaken democracy.”

That’s mostly nonsense. It all depends on how it’s managed. If we lose low-skill manufacturing assembly jobs to Mexico or to automation, then we need to re-train the workers — and get them better jobs in places that need them. All the places I live in need plumbers, carpenters, roofers, electricians, air conditioning guys, etc.

But we neglected the workers (dumb, dumb. dumb). They got justifiably mad, and voted for Mr. Trump.

Now his Administration is going to f*ck with Mexico and China. His administration is itching for a trade war.  You can feel it in the wind. No one in the administration seems to give a sh*t about what happens when you start trade wars — as an example try the 1930s. With trade wars, everyone gets poorer. The Great Depression was only saved by the ramp-up of manufacturing of the Second World. You get the impression that the administration is accelerating the car as they drive it over the cliff.

My position: I am for free trade. But I also for spending much of its benefits on the workers who lose their jobs. There’s a million ways of doing this, including forcing the companies moving to Mexico to train their fired workers and get them jobs. Heck, this is routinely done for white collar workers.

Meanwhile the market continues to reward technology stocks — like FB, NFLX, GOOGL, and AMZN, etc.

Stay away from manufacturers with heavy Nafta presence.

Trump creates millions of new jobs

SATIRE FROM THE BOROWITZ REPORT
TRUMP CREATES TEN MILLION JOBS FOR FACT CHECKERS

DonaldTrump

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)-In less than a week as President, Donald J. Trump has created ten million jobs for fact checkers, the Department of Labor has confirmed.

Harland Dorrinson, the executive director of HonestyWatch, a Minnesota-based fact-checking organization, called the pace of hiring in the fact-checking industry since Trump’s Inauguration “blistering.”

“The nation’s supply of fact checkers is being stretched to the breaking point,” he said. “There are not enough fact checkers to keep up with the exponential growth in alternative facts.”

Dorrinson said that he expects hiring in the fact-checking sector to remain robust for the next four years, outpacing employment in manufacturing, agriculture, and technology.

“With Trump in the White House, recent college graduates are flocking to careers in fact checking,” he said. “There’s guaranteed job security, and you basically just have to Google stuff.”

In his daily press briefing, Sean Spicer, the White House press spokesman, touted the surging employment for fact checkers but said that the actual number of jobs created was closer to ten billion.

It figures that the day the Dow goes over 20,000 Harry doesn’t write a column. I guess he is too busy eating crow after he predicted that the stock market would crash and the economy would tank, if Trump was allowed to steal the election. What a left-wing Liberal wack job. But not to worry. You can still vote Hillary for Mayor of NYC even if you don’t live here or are dead, in typical Democrat fashion.

      I have two questions:
      1. Why are you so nasty? If you’d followed my recommendations — see the right hand column on the web site — you’d be doing just fine, as I am.
      2. If you don’t like what I write, why do you bother to read it? What am I missing?

Harry, you recently called Wells Fargo a “cockroach stock” and told your readers to avoid it like the plague. I’m glad I ignored your advice which is usually bad. Wells Fargo is up almost 4 percent today.

    • harrynewton says:

It’s still a cockroach stock. But all the banks are doing well. A rising tide and all that.

      • Brian Hill says:

You can’t weasel out. You called it a cockroach stock and told readers to avoid it. It’s up about 17 percent since then.

Harry, you clearly do not understand TRump voters. Many of us WANT to drive that car over the cliff. For too long this nation has been run by insiders, cronies, old school lib-tards. Let’s shake things up! It hasn’t worked. Let’s basically eliminate the Supreme Court and most of the media. What you lib-tards call “fake news” has a lot of truth to it. “Fake news” has outed many pedophiles in government. So you are against this? I hope Trump decimates WAshington D.C. and then plants his own personal Donald tRump flag in the middle of town, preferably on Pelosi’s soiled butt and proclaims that the town will be called “Trump-ville.” Oh, and if you were not born here, you need to go home.

    • Dman says:

AG Sessions knows exactly who the “pedophiles” are.

Lots of DC democrats are going to be serving long jail sentences.

Pizza and hotdogs…..Podesta will be first to go.

Have you looked at who is in Trump’s cabinet?
