A simple solution to a confusing market. I extol the virtues of LED bulbs.

Two days ago, I wrote “Now is NOT the time to jump in big-time.

Then the market went through the roof.

Now they say all the awful news has been baked in. We’re at at bottom. We should buy, buy, buy.

But what?

What’s amazing — at least to me — that there’s little relationship between gains and P/Es. We seem to buying not what makes most sense (low P/Es) but what we always have. Hot momentum stocks. Look at this little chart of today’s gains. These are the top ten gainers today on my Watch List. Two of them are not even earning money. Hence no P/Es.

Being no genius and being totally incapable of  picking which stocks to own in this strange market, I’ve stuck with my tried-and-true strategy of having the bulk of my stock money in one Vanguard ETF — namely the VGT.  It’s done well in the last five years. Here it is compared to Nasdaq (IXIC), the Dow and the S&P500. It’s the top blue line.

Good news on the lighting front

I love LED light bulbs. They last longer. They don’t turn yellow as they get old.  They turn on immediately. And they save at least 60% of my energy bills.

In the beginning, LED bulbs were only available for simple household bulbs like the 60 watt incandescent.

But things are changing. Several years ago I bought 70 big LEDs to replace the 1,000 halogens we had on our three indoor tennis courts in Old Chatham. Today, only one bulb has blown. All the rest are working like the day we screwed them in. And we’re saving 70% on our energy bills.

And now more and more bulbs are being made in LED — including those long, thin fluorescent bulbs.

We got ours from a super company called OEO, which specializes in lighting big spaces, like gyms, warehouses and tennis courts. Call Mary Jo Brooks on 847-847-3996. She’s really good. Their web site is here.

Remember the Super Bowl 2022? They had this wonderful commercial featuring Matt Damon. “Fortune Favors The Brave.” If you had bought bitcoin through them at the time of the Super Bowl you’d have lost about half your money. Crypto.com has also had its share of problems. I found one headline, “Over $30 Million Stolen in Crypto.com Hack.” Meantime their systems have crashed intermittently, hindering your ability to get your money back. Still, the commercial is great. Hint: It applies equally well to tennis.

The heat and humidity can kill

Our bodies sweat to cool them. Our sweat evaporates. We cool.

When the humidity is too high for our sweat to evaporate, we’re in big trouble.

Be careful. A lot of people are dying of the heat and humidity.

I love this

The AC in my country office conked out today. The hottest day of the year. What fun. And it’s hard to buy parts.

Why does the IRS keep losing my 2019 return? Why do they insist on paper?
