Like many New Yorkers, I have a house in the country. It’s 127 miles north of New York City, in the Hudson Valley. The area boomed for many years as New Yorkers built second homes and the locals became carpenters. That business of new home construction has dried up throughout the country, forcing today’s high and stubborn unemployment rate.
Still, it’s not gloom and doom out there. There is a huge and growing maintenance service business dealing with everything from taking care of houses to taking care of shopping mall parking lots.
When God closes a door, He opens a window.
It’s a good philosophy that, in my experience, has always worked.
Classic pump and dump. Reader Ed Mittelbusher emails me:
I saw an article on the Internet touting lithium as the next Oil Rush because of the increased usage in batteries for electric cars. Check the 30 day chart to see what happened today, down 65% with a volume of over 23 million shares. That’s 50 % of the outstanding shares. PT Barnum would be proud.
Baidu’s new higher target. Equities research analysts at Goldman Sachs boosted their price target on shares of Baidu (BIDU) to $160 in a research note to investors on Friday. BIDU is currently $148.52. So it’s not much of a stretch to $160.
Is it because I’m old and skeptical that I wonder why Goldman Sachs did this, at this moment? Is there some other motive? Investment banking, perhaps?
Whatever.
The lesson in today’s world is simple: Don’t listen to them. do your own research.
My research likes the stock for two simple (though obvious) reasons: Search in China is booming and will continue to boom. Second, Baidu is the overwhelming leader. Google lost the plot in China and will never catch Baidu.

Morris visits the doctor.
Morris returns from the doctor and tells his wife that the Doctor has told him that he has only 24 hours to live. Given the prognosis, Morris asks his wife for sex.
Naturally, she agrees, so they make love.
About 6 hours later, the husband goes to his wife and says, ‘Honey, you know I now have only 18 hours to live. Could we please do it one more time?’
Of course, the wife agrees, and they do it again.
Later, as the man gets into bed, he looks at his watch and realizes that he now has only 8 hours left. He touches his wife’s shoulder and asks, ‘Honey, please… just one more time before I die.’
She says, ‘Of course, Dear,’ and they make love for the third time.
After this session, the wife rolls over and falls asleep. Morris, however, worried about his impending death, tosses and turns, until he’s down to 4 more hours. He taps his wife, who rouses. ‘Honey, I have only 4 more hours….Do you think we could…’
At this point the wife sits up and says, ‘Listen Morris, enough is enough. I have to get up in the morning… you don’t.
