Look at the charts of these stocks over the past three years. It’s remarkable how wll they’ve performed.
Contemporary wisdom says since 1927, 47% of the total return of the S&P 500 has come from dividends.
High-yielders tend to isolate you a bit from the gyrations which non-dividend paying stocks tend to go through.
We’re going down again today. Lousy employment numbers.
Our president lives in the clouds, intimidated by the military and unfazed by the local mess. See below.
Bernanke’s QE2 didn’t work, except to keep interest rates ultra- low. Yield on he 2-year treasury note has hit a record low. More good news for savers. Whoopee.
A friend is borrowing at 2% to buy properties yielding 7%. Lucky for him. He has plenty of collateral. Such low-interest loans aren’t available to most people.
None of this bodes well for the stockmarket. When in doubt, stay largely out.

Only in New York. This is the Time Warner building on Columbus Circle.
In one of these towers there’s a 5,000 square foot apartment that is being rented for $45,000 a month. The owner (i.e. the landlord) has found a new tenant who’s prepared to pay $67,000 a month.
In order to motivate the existing tenant to leave, the owner (landlord) is paying the old tenant $10,000 a month for three years. That’s a total of $360,000.
New York real estate gurus say this arrangement is “unique.”
I don’t make this stuff up.
Unlocked GSM iPhones. Apple is now selling unlocked GSM iPhone4. The 16 gig model costs $649. The 32 gig model costs $749. You can use it in the U.S. and overseas. All you need to do is to buy a prepaid GSM micro-SIM card, which you can typically get for $20 to $30 wherever you travel in Europe, Asia or even Ausralia.
A micro-SIM card is a small memory card used in the iPhone 4 and other cellular devices that stores your wireless account information.
Such generosity. Remember how Goldman Sachs is now “customer friendly?” One of my GS funds paid me a small dividend. Goldman put it in one of their money market funds.
Their generous interest rate? Try this — it’s 0.11%.
Even more fun; They can’t ACH (wire) me my money. They’re FedExing me a check.
I don’t make this stuff up.
Our President intimidated by his military. As I listenedto Obama yesterday, I heard a man totally out of touch with reality and a man completely intimidated by his military brass. The upshot: We’re in Afghanistan forever. We will nation build there, not here. there is no logic to this. Stratfor, the intelligence service, explained:
Obama’s Afghanistan Plan and the Realities of Withdrawal
U.S. President Barack Obama announced June 22 that the long process of drawing down forces in Afghanistan would begin on schedule in July. Though the initial phase of the drawdown appears limited, minimizing the tactical and operational impact on the ground in the immediate future, the United States and its allies are now beginning the inevitable process of removing their forces from Afghanistan. This will entail the risk of greater Taliban battlefield successes.
Afghanistan, a landlocked country in the heart of Central Asia, is one of the most isolated places on Earth. This isolation has posed huge logistical challenges for the United States. Hundreds of shipping containers and fuel trucks must enter the country every day from Pakistan and from the north to sustain the nearly 150,000 U.S. and allied forces stationed in Afghanistan, about the half the total number of Afghan security forces. Supplying a single gallon of gasoline in Afghanistan reportedly costs the U.S. military an average of $400, while sustaining a single U.S. soldier runs around $1 million a year (by contrast, sustaining an Afghan soldier costs about $12,000 a year). …
Based solely on the activity on the ground in Afghanistan today, one would think the United States and its allies were preparing for a permanent presence, not the imminent beginning of a long-scheduled drawdown (a perception the United States and its allies have in some cases used to their advantage to reach political arrangements with locals). An 11,500-foot all-weather concrete and asphalt runway and an air traffic control tower were completed this February at Camp Leatherneck and Camp Bastion in Helmand province. Another more than 9,000-foot runway was finished at Shindand Air Field in Herat province last December.
Meanwhile, a so-called iron mountain of spare parts needed to maintain vehicles and aircraft, construction and engineering equipment, generators, ammunition and other supplies – even innumerable pallets of bottled water – has slowly been built up to sustain day-to-day military operations. …
Why do I care? Simple reasons. I can think of a dozen overcrowded airports in America that could do with a new 11,500 foot runway. We have maybe 15 million unemployed Americans, some of whom would be happy for the job of building a new airport. Until we get some serious government attention on our problems, it’s hard to see the continuing and widespread economic recovery that would lead to a sustained rise in stock prices. This president has his head in the clouds of fine rhetoric and no priactical action. You can read the rest of Stratfor analysis here.

Harry Newton

Harry, This was from your column a couple days ago. Here in Australia this would be gross negligence for any employer or contractor to work on a roof with no safety equipment. Employers have been charged with manslaughter for accidents from scenes like this. And this was a program from the Mayor of New York?
Harry, rather than spending $650 to $750 for an unlocked iPhone that you'll use only when you travel, buy a locked iPhone 3GS on eBay for around $250, have it unlocked locally for $25 (they're listed all over Craigslist) and travel with that buying local, prepaid Sim's as you travel. That's what I did for our trip to Switzerland last week. Worked like a charm.
I did that a couple of times but Switzerland's set up charges were very high compared to other countries- is that still the case?
No; I paid chf 20 and got chf 19 in credit, so chf 1 wasn't too high a price to pay for the first time. Thereafter, there is no add-on for refills. I think I paid chf 3/day for unlimited voice, and chf 4/day for unlimited data. Most days I never used the voice, just data.
Good experienced advice, even good for Australia!
Maybe we should fight the war in Afghanistan more like we fought WWll instead of the way we fought in Vietnam…..just a thought. Harry, do Obama supports still believe in “hope and change”……sounds to me as though you liberals are beginning to loose a little faith.
I started to 'loose' faith with Mission Accomplished.
The left does not support Obama, but they will mostly vote for him because there is no alternative. The presidency is set up as always to serve power.
There were loud cheers when the USSR went over the brink following their being sucked into the black hole of Afghanistan. The loudest cheers came from the US, who then traded places with the USSR.
