Google, bonds and a long weekend (for me)

Make sure you see The Hurt Locker and From Paris With Love.

If you haven’t seen Avatar, go see it — but only in 3D. Sit closer to the screen than you normally would.

Read this weekend’s Economist. It has the latest Technology Review. It begins here.

Hug the kids, he grandkids, the spouse and your friends. Get lots of exercise. Eat less. You do not want to be any of those people I saw shopping at a local La Qunta, CA supermarket. Virtually all gave obesity a whole new meaning. I hate to think what the nation’s health bill will in ten years’ time when these people get all the predictable diseases — from diabetes to heart attacks. I don’t see any fat old people.

Google is coming back.

I played tennis against a very talented player yesterday. I lost the first set, felt horribly depressed, then came roaring back to win the second. There are two lessons:

1. I can do it. The keys are the brain and the legs.

2. Tennis (and life) is strategy. Lose, recover and move on — with a different strategy. Play “ugly” if that’s what it takes.

I bought some triple tax-free bonds yesterday. I know this is NOT the right time to buy bonds. But they were cheap — somewhat of a “distress” sale. You got to wait, have patience, then pounce. Go for your winner. Very much like playing tennis. Wait for your shot.  Wait. Wait. Wait. Then hit your winner.

Favorite recent New Yorker cartoons:

Harry Newton, who surveys the local economic conundrum. California is broke.  But here in California’s Coachella Valley you can’t get reservations for restaurants and the parking lots for the shops are all full. California, to an outsider, is a constant reminder of what God could do, if only He had the money.
