Reading charts is like reading tea leaves. Cramer says the 200 S&P moving average has moved over the 50 day moving average. That’s good.
A friend sends me:
On average, February is the second worst performing month of the year, posting an average return of -0.24% since 1928. February performance has been negative 49% of the time, the second most of any month.
He sends me these charts:
To my brain things look pretty upbeat — at least today.
I get pitches. This was my favorite recent one. It came from OptionsZone, whoever they are.
Wonderful what you can do with charts.
But, first, check what’s happened to natural gas in the last year. There has been a huge boom in production and a not-so-fast pickup in demand. Hence the price has fallen and fallen and fallen.
And this picture snapped this morning from CNBC:
The moral of these charts? Don’t try to catch falling knives.
Ditto for my second unfavorite trade of the year — a bet that interest rates are about to rise:
Scalability. That’s a key. You want your chosen company to be able to grow and grow and grow.
A prime example. Amazon was in books. Now it’s the Walmart of the Internet. Whatever I seek, Amazon seems to always have it cheaper. Remarkable. I hope it falls big. I may pick up a little.
Every web site has disocunts — if you have a promotion coupon. If you don’t, call them on the phone and ask for one.
It’s truly amazing how much money you can save by simply asking.
This is getting sicker and sicker. Remember the Costa Concordia?
Now for your quiz and some favorite, tasteless one-liners.
+ How do they serve alcoholic drinks on Italian cruise ships? – On the rocks
+ What vegetables do you get with dinner on Italian cruise ships? – Leeks
+ What’s the fastest way to get off an Italian cruise ship? – Follow the captain
+ When the captain of the ill fated Costa Concordia was asked if he knew where he was going he replied “off course.”
+ So the captain of the Costa Concordia will soon be in the dock. That’s more than can be said for his ship.
+ The captain says he is not guilty of manslaughter. He has witnesses to prove he was nowhere near the passengers who died.
+ The Costa Concordia is probably the most expensive thing to go down in Italy since Berlusconi’s last hooker.
+ What’s the difference between the Italian economy and the stricken cruise liner Costa Concordia? Nothing – The bottom dropped out of both.
Harry Newton who wonders why rotator cuff is still hurting…

my FA posted an article by Michael Kahn. Two line summaryMuch has been written about the golden cross, which occurs when the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day average
Then Michael goes into all the things your friend posted, but he summed it up this way, which agrees with your catching a fallen knife. He concludes that “… low trading volume thanks to a disengaged public leaves the market at the mercy of news generated outside the market and specifically from Europe. More than ever, relying solely on indicators is a bad idea.”
Hi Harry,
Please do share your cold laser treatment experience. I have been suffering from a tennis related shoulder injury for the past year and it is quite frustrating.
Best
On Friday. I'm going back to the sports therapist tomorrow morning.
Harry, tell us your thoughts on how you would play “Facebook” IPO if you were to play it…! Rotator Cuff injuries are a rough rehab…time, my friend, time and exercises that work opposing muscles….your trainer or rehab tech will give you ideas, but I imagine you already know more than they know…rip
I've been reading about rotator cuff problems. They can be very serious. I'm being very careful.
