How to find new stocks to buy

Finding new stocks to buy. Not easy. Here’s an idea: It’s the 52-week high list from a company called BarChart.com. As a I studied the charts, I realized BarChart’s people have provided many different ways to cut this fish — see the lines under Market Pulse on left and the headings on the columns. I’m increasingly impressed. It’s worth a visit and some of your time. Here’s just the top of their amazing chart.

52 Week Highs

My sister and her husband are in town, visiting from Australia. Hence my time to study BarChart stocks was limited. Last year my sister bought a one-bedroom Manhattan apartment for investment. It’s done well. They bought it with higher Aussie dollars, hence saving a bit. The apartment has also skyrocketed in value, as virtually all apartments in New York have (and still are). They’re actually getting a rent which covers their mortgage payments, their maintenance and leaves them a few bucks for a return.

Enormous favorable publicity on Apple’s new 5C, 5S and IOS 7. My wish to buy AAPL cheaper (see yesterday’s column) has been thwarted by ecstasy today from the New York Times, the Wall Street and sundry techie blogs. The iPhone 5S goes on sale on Friday. It will be a blow-out.

Technology makes them and breaks them. From the Wall Street Journal: Companies Unplug From the Electric Grid, Delivering a Jolt to Utilities. The basic message is that alternative energy sources — especially solar — is plummeting in cost, making it increasingly competitive with your local power utility. Many companies are buying in, freaking out local utilities. First Solar and other solar companies have done well recently:

The BIG opportunity in my mind is setting up your own solar design and installation company — with a focus on systems for corporations. You have the cost savings story and “control over your own destiny” arguments. For the full Journal piece, click here.

A reader suggests I’m ready to use this line:
An elderly gentleman  walks into an upscale cocktail lounge. He is very well-dressed, smelling slightly of an expensive after-shave, hair well-groomed, great-looking suit, flower in his lapel, shoes shined and with no walker. He presents a suave, well-looked-after image.

Seated at the bar is a fine-looking elderly lady. The gentleman walks over, sits along-side of her, orders a drink, takes a sip, turns to her and says,

“Please tell me, good looking, do I come here often?

Harry Newton who showed his sister a little of New York last night. I’ve been in New York for 44 years. It’s never been as crowded with tourists and investors. It’s an amazing scene. Crowds and construction everywhere. The weather is fantastic. Come visit us.

“Come visit” (today). “Don’t visit” (yesterday). Fun!
