Searching for activist shares

Yesterday, I promised I’d discuss companies that activist hedge funds were targeting, e.g. GM.. But I got stuck on oodles of investment paperwork. I did one trade. I bought CYBR before earnings — every dangerous. But I gambled right and this morning I’m up 21%. I like the cyber-security space.

Flukes happen.

For now, you should read the cover story in last week’s Economist:

The perfect, big, cheap monitor. It’s the ASUS VS247H-P and comes in five sizes from 21 inches to 27 inches.

ASUSBigMonitor

They range in from $130 to $260.  They all have 1920 x 1080 pixels. Which means you don’t get better resolution, you just get larger resolution. I prefer the 23.5 inch at $157. Perfect size for someone (like me) who likes type he can read. To buy it (or any of them), click here.

A priest and a nun. (A  standby. Wonderful.)

A priest and a nun are traveling across the desert on a camel.

Suddenly the camel dies. God appears. They have one wish.

The priest asks, “I’ve never seen a woman naked.”

She obliges.

She says, “I’ve never seen a man naked.”

He obliges.

She asks what is that thing between your legs?

“It’s a life giver. It gives life,” he explains.

“Good,” she says, “Stick it in the camel and let’s get going.”

HarryNewton
Harry Newton who attended a lecture by Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson last night. His simple (and horribly depressing) message is the U.S. doesn’t focus on, or spend as much as it should on science. Two places are eating our lunch — Europe and, wait for this, South Korea, home of LG, Samsung, Hyundai, etc. As Tyson said, science, determines our health, wealth and security. Not spending enough, not having it as a national priority is not good for our future. To me personally, the sad thing is how much the Defense Department spends and how little it shares, despite the fact that we are funding the Defense Department’s spending through our taxes. Remember the Internet came out of work the Defense Department did. But that was a long, long time ago.

Does anyone have Jeff Bezos’s email address? I’m trying to get my dictionary up on Kindle. But the Kindle search engine needs fixing — and only Amazon can do that.

Don’t destroy your very own business by not replying to your customer’s emails or voicemails, by not staying in touch, by not showing up when you promised, by not doing what you promised when you promised. This stuff is SO simple. Yet so hard for so many. End of today’s lecture. Yes, this morning, I’m not pleased with some suppliers.

Renting a car on your next trip? Use Priceline. They got me one through Budget at 27% cheaper than getting it directly through National’s Emerald Club. When I returned the car a few days early to Budget — wait for this — I got a huge discount, and ended up paying less than half had I gone through National. Thank you Priceline.

I’ll be back later today with an expanded blog and mailing.
