The next BIG thing. Several really neat things to buy. A very sweet soldier story.

The last BIG Things were online shopping (Amazon), online search (Google), the cloud (Microsoft, Google and Amazon), electric vehicles (Tesla), SPACs, housing fixups (Home Depot and Lowes), Fintech (PayPal and Block), pandemic stocks (Zoom and Peloton).

Most of these bounced today (Monday). But they’re still way down.

Zoom produced a good earnings report late Monday and its stock bounced 13+% after hours but it’s still 74% down from his 2021 highs.

TV gurus are grabbing some — also called catching a falling knife. I don’t think it’s necessary to go back our favorite tech stocks. Maybe there’s a new way of looking at some? Here’s a chart I made ranking a bunch of decent companies by their Price Earnings ratio. My friend Bob K. will be pleased I’ve caught his “value” bug. This chart shows today’s price moves.

We can’t replace these old Big Things but we will need to find new ones. That’s my latest research job. Here’s my weekend stab:

+ Personal health technology. Read the Economist on wearable technology. Click here.

+ Hospital health technology. It takes long and it’s too expensive to check people into hospitals before their procedures. Better to do all the blood work and measurements at home.

+  Farmland.

+ Household energy. Solar. Home battery cells.

+ Lithium miners.

+ Online gaming.

+ Wind farms and hydro.

+ And maybe nuclear (especially for Europe).

+ Defense. Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.

+ Customer service. It’s abysmal. One exception: JPMorgan Chase. They’re really good.

“Cheap” stocks, maybe

+ Nike.

+ Devon, Pioneer Natural Resources,

+ JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs.

Paul Krugman says it’s all over for crypto

His argument: Everyone who’s in has been burned. There’s no one else to fire up the buying emotion. Bitcoin is $29,134.50, down over 50% from a few months ago.  Krugman writes “Crashing Crypto: Is This Time Different?” Read Krugman here.

Is inflation real?

Diesel is up 76% from a year ago. Bird food is up from $9 to $21 a bag. That’s in a few months.

Useful advice

+ Check. Check. Check. I bought a $1300 circuit board for my AC chiller. It was the wrong one.

+ Don’t upgrade to Windows 11. Says PC Magazine, “If you don’t want to buy a new computer or give up an efficient interface that you love, then don’t upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 10 does everything just as well, and in some cases even better.” I agree 100% with them. I’ve just gone through an hour of trying to get one of my favorite programs — 1st Clock — to work on Windows 11. It wasn’t the first Win 10 software that didn’t work on Win 11. Microsoft created Windows 11 to sell more computers, not to give its customers better software. Here’s the link to the PC Mag. Click here

+ All Internet routers need regular rebooting. You’ll notice a slowing down. Unplug them. Count to 20 and plug them in. If desperate, re-set them to factory settings. That’s what I had to do with my Netgear Orbi.

+ EyeBuyDirect.com is the only place to buy your glasses. Choose only metal frames. They last longer.

+ My antique friends are freaking over Long Covid. They’ve read I have friends and family with it. They want to know what they should do? There’s only one thing: Don’t get covid. There is no cure for Long Covid. Get double boostered. Wear a mask inside. Don’t go to inside super-spreader events. Don’t do stupid. Vaccinations have hit a wall in some places. Nine states are under 60% vaccinated The worst is Wyoming, with only 53.3% vaccinated. More info at the Mayo Clinic here.

+ The new iPad Air is positively darling. As light as air. You can buy a pen for taking notes and a keyboard for pretending it’s a laptop. A totally beautiful product. Apple will sell trillions of them. Go here.

+ Free over the air TV.  My friend is getting 40+ channels on his under $30 antenna. You can buy slightly more pricey antennas (from Amazon and BetsBuy) that may give you more than 40 channels, which includes all your local TV stations. You buy the antenna once and enjoy free TV for the rest of your life. Neat.

Beautiful story. I’ve read it three times.
