Today’s New York Times front page:
The photo’s caption is “Lining up for a meal on Monday in Staryi Saltiv, in eastern Ukraine. Many there have been without electricity or water since April.”
The Fed story begins:
Federal Reserve officials have coalesced around a plan to raise interest rates by three-quarters of a point next month as policymakers grow alarmed by the staying power of rapid price increases — and increasingly worried that inflation is now feeding on itself.
Such concerns could also prompt the Fed to raise rates at least slightly higher next year than previously forecast as officials face two huge choices at their coming meetings: when to slow rapid rate increases and when to stop them altogether.
Central bankers had expected to debate slowing down at their November meeting, but a rash of recent data suggesting that the labor market is still strong and that inflation is unrelenting has them poised to delay serious discussion of a smaller move for at least a month. The conversation about whether to scale back is now more likely to happen in December.
The story continues:
Investors have entirely priced in a fourth consecutive three-quarter-point move at the Fed’s Nov. 1-2 meeting, and officials have made no effort to change that expectation.
That could be the reason that I’ve lost money for the last three days on my shorts. I’m now starting to cover some of them. It’s a weird time.
I don’t feel overly smart.
Today’s happiest-making investments are the one and two year treasuries paying 4.52% and 4.57% respectively.
How dumb can I be?
For two years I’ve been telling you my readers NOT to buy Chinese stocks. I was right. Look at Alibaba over the past two years:
Did I sell it short? No. Was I not thinking? Yes.
Apple is crazy making
Look carefully at your iPhone. You’ll find two Apple apps.
One sells only Apple stuff. The other is called App Store. That’s the one you want when someone tells you to download their app from the App Store.
This little confusing idiocy cost me several hours of frustration.
Send me a thank you note for saving you hours of frustration.
Everyone should play tennis
It’s a painless way to get the exercise you need in your old age.
Or frankly, at any age.
You focus on killing your opponent. You don’t focus on how many reps you do. Or whether you’ve stretched enough or whether, God forbid, you’ve stretched too much.
Tennis is faster than golf and takes far less time. You get less frustrated because there’s always another rally.
If you hurt your shoulder, you can always play without overhead serving. My partner, Mark, and I do.
Tennis is cheaper than golf. Every town has a free public tennis court. You can pick up racquets and shoes on eBay
for under $100. Nike sells tennis shoes for $60.
You can now buy “hearing aids” everywhere
Legislation just through Congress means you don’t need an audiologist. And you don’t have to shell out $7,000 for a pair.
But you haven’t needed to that for a while.
For example, I bought a pair of perfectly respectable hearing aids on Amazon for $120.
Two years later I still use them. Click here.
Amazon has an “Amazon’s Choice” for $199.
I haven’t tried them. (I will, soon). But they got good reviews. Click here.
In short, unless you got no hearing at all, you’d be best with one of these cheapies, and not spending $7,000.
Please don’t buy the hearing aids they’re peddling on TV. They’re too expensive. They have to be — to pay all the smiling models in the ads.
He won. He’s the 2022 Far Bear Week Champ
On Tuesday, the Internet crowned bear 747, a.k.a. “Bear Force One,” the winner of Fat Bear Week 2022. The estimated 1,400-pound giant is over 20 years old, according to Mashable’s Mark Kaufman, and he previously captured the title in 2020.
The annual competition is brown bears in Alaska’s Katmai National Park. The bears fatten up by eating salmon along the Brooks River in preparation for the winter’s hibernation. It’s important they gain weight during the summer and fall, since they survive on their fat stores for six months through the winter — called hibernation. Adult male bears typically weigh between 700 and 900 pounds in mid-summer and often weigh over 1,200 pounds by fall.
Do not try this diet at home.
Can you leave your keyless fob in your car?
Most likely, yes.
Make sure you turn everything off, including reading and dome lights.
Make sure you have one of these in your car — just in case.
I’ve flattened the battery twice in my new Subaru Outback. I left lights and AC on. I thought — stupidly –the car would turn them off for me.
Wonderful story
Sadie, a 64-year old woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience. Seeing God she asked “Is my time up?”
God said, “No, you have another 25 years, 2 months and 8 days to live. “Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well make the most of it.
Upon recovery, Sadie decided to stay in the hospital and have a face-lift, liposuction, and a tummy tuck. She even changed her hair color and brightened her teeth!
After her last operation, she was released from the hospital.
Crossing the street on her way home, she was killed by an ambulance.
Arriving in front of God, she demanded, “I thought you said I had another 25 years? Why didn’t you pull me from out of the path of the ambulance?”
God replied: “I didn’t recognize you.”
This video is genuinely funny
Wonderful marketing
Don’t ask what these designer eggs cost.
That’s it. See you tomorrow — Harry Newton
