Cautiously, cautiously.

Speculative stock plummets. YRCW plummeted big-time yesterday to 31 cents. Earnings are released on August 3. That’s next Tuesday. Earnings should be good. Remember this is rampant speculation.

Three videos worth watching,

1. Elizabeth Warren on the upcoming commercial real estate crisis. She explains “Extend and pretend.” She explains how 2988 local banks are essentially broke because so much commercial real estate is in trouble. She also explains “see through” buildings. She explains why so many banks are in denial and why we’re seeing so few commercial real estate bargains out there. The woman is good, intelligent, logical and funny.  I will not deny it. I think she’s cute. Heh, for a professor of bankruptcy, she rocks big time. Click here.

2.  Christopher Hitchins on religion. Do not expect favorable comments on religion. Click here.

3. Jon Stewart and the Daily show are back after a two week vacation. You can see Monday’s and Tuesday’s episodes.  It’s a nightly ritual. Susan and I watch Jon Stewart together. Click here.

Verizon FiOS rocks. Verizon’s speed optimization software worked for me.  It has issues with VPNs. Look at my latest speed:

That’s the fastest you’ll ever see on a home/office installation (like what I have).

The speed is great. But you need a fast computer. It’s truly great for watching videos full-screen.

Other than the ultra-fast Internet speed, FiOS has been super reliable and has lots of TV channels we don’t watch, and all those we do.

Yes, they still smoke. But there is hope. My dear friend Freddie Golino emails m:

Harry, I didn’t tell you that I quit smoking a couple of months ago.

A colleague and myself from work read  “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking” by Allen Carr and we quit smoking…..

I don’t know what subliminal message this book planted but since I put it down 2 months ago I haven’t smoked nor have I had the urge to smoke.

Thank you Freddie. If you still smoke, pick up a copy of the book here.

Worried about pre-diabetes? Give up sugar, bread, Coca Cola, corn and beets. Sorry. This from a dear friend who’s battling a pre-diabetic condition with exercise and diet (as against taking insulin).

Dole raisins are the absolute best. My wife, Susan, is even better. She picked me up a carton in Massachusetts recently. You can’t get them in New York. The Dole salesman for the north-east lives in Boston and hates New York.  So he doesn’t visit. (I don’t make this stuff up.)

If you see this carton at your local supermarket, buy it. Dole raisins are really good.

How bad is the economy? The economy is so bad that:

I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail.

I ordered a burger at McDonald’s and the kid behind the counter asked, “Can you afford fries with that?”

If the bank returns your check marked “Insufficient Funds,” you call them and ask if they meant you or them.

Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and finally learned their children’s names.

A truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico.

Dick Cheney took his stockbroker hunting.

Motel Six won’t leave the light on anymore.

The Mafia is laying off judges.

Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.

I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Lifeline. I got a call center in Pakistan , and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.

Harry Newton, who’s been crazy busy chasing deadlines and suppliers. It’s time today for writing some more covered calls. See the column.
